San Diego’s Only Wheelchair Ballroom Dance Group Provides Social Connection
Between Able-bodied Dancers and Wheelchair Users

September 9, 2009 (La Mesa)--The Sharp Grossmont Rehab Center will offer a free, eight-week session of ballroom dance instruction every Thursday beginning on September 10, 2009. Students and their able-bodied dance partners will learn to do the Fox Trot, Swing, Cha-Cha, and Rumba.

Classes are taught by William Valencia, the only certified wheelchair ballroom dance instructor on the west coast, and owner of Absolutely Dance Sport Studios.  The effort is supported by WheelchairDancing.TV, a nonprofit organization that aspires to teach Latin dances to 1 mllion wheelchair users by the end of this year.

Along with its physical benefits of improved balance, flexibility and range of motion, wheelchair dancing promotes emotional well-being through social interaction, relationship development and greater acceptance among able-bodied individuals. Wheelchair dancing is a popular social and recreational activity, with more than 5,000 dancers in over 40 countries.

The free classes will be held Thursdays, September 10 through October 29, 2009, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Sharp Grossmont Rehab Center, 5555 Grossmont Center Drive, La Mesa.
