Public meeting set for January 19th

January 12, 2015 (Ramona) – Efforts are ramping up to build a skatepark in Ramona.

Ramona Skatepark Champions is a new organization seeking nonprofit status.  Its members include residents,  parents and local businesses. Their goal is a raise money for construction of a 16,500 square foot Ramona Skatepark on Main Street behind the Ramona Library.

The site is on county-owned land that’s part of the Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus. That means the park would be run by the County’s Parks and Recreation department – and the County would take on liability for the skatepark once open.

A public meeting on the proposed skatepark will be held on Monday, January 19th at 6:30 p.m. at Ramona Town Hall (729 Main Street, Ramona).

The group aims to create a five-year plan similar to the plan used to build Lakeside’s skatepark, which opened last May, the first such facility in the county’s unincorporated region.

The project’s supporters include the Tony Hawk Foundation, which has donated over $3.4 million to help build hundreds of skateparks nationwide.  The Foundation’s founder won the National Skateboard Association world championship 12 times in a row.

The Ramona Skatepark Champions has set up a website at www.ramonaskatepark.org as well as a Facebook page to organize and raise funds.

Dwight Webster,  media and outreach “champion” for Ramona Skatepark Champions, acknowledges that the effort will take time, the Ramona Sentinel reports.  “This will be a long race,” he concludes, “not a sprint.”
