After punt return TD, the defender goes 108 yards with a return of a missed field goal

April 26, 2017 (Santee) -- One of the program's top players for several seasons, Deana Guidry earned the title as face of the San Diego Surge franchise following Saturday's Women's Football Alliance {www.wfaprofootball.com} home opener.

On Saturday (Apr. 22) registered a pair of special team touchdowns, plus was one of the leading tacklers, fueling the unbeaten Surge (3-0) to an easy 37-7 pasting of the visiting Sin City Trojans (formerly Las Vegas Showgirlz) at Santee Community Stadium.

Guidry has earned several WFA All-America berths since joining the Surge following a standout career as a collegiate student-athlete. However, she always seemed a step behind in the publicity department behind former Surge linebacker Kneghi  Martin.

However, Martin, the former member of the original USA National Team from 2010 and a multiple WFA All-America honoree, left the ballclub playing for the North County Stars, leaving the cameras to shine on Guidry.

She did not disappoint.

After returning a punt 29 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, Guidry established what is believed to be an al-time women's football record in any league by returning the ball 108 yards (theoretically, the longest possible non-scrimmage play is 109 yards) after the Trojans field goal attempt fell short in the second quarter.

Taking the ball in front of her right goal post, she zig-zagged around three Trojans, broke free near midfield and strutted down the Surge sideline

In between, Guidry was a key factor in a consistent, heavy Surge pass rush which finally resulted in a poor Trojans snap, which sailed over the quarterback's head and out of the end zone for a safety.

The scores pushed the Surge to a 16-0 lead by halftime, en route in continuing the franchise's remarkable win streak.

Since the incorporation of the ballclub into the current format as the Surge in 2010 (they had several previous names, including Sunflowers), the team has never lost a home game, whether at its original base at Mira Mesa High or the current Santana High location.

The winning streak will be severely tested this Saturday (Apr 29) when the Fresno-based Central Cal War Angles comes to town. They were the last team to defeat the Surge, winning in Clovis, Calif., in the 2015 playoffs.

"They will just come right at you with everything they've got," said Surge head coach Mike Suggett. "There is no secret in what they will try to do to you."

The teams enter the contest tied at No. 6 in the national rankings, with the winner holding the inside edge to hoofs, hoping to advance to the W-Bowl (formerly Alliance Bowl).
