April 12, 2023 (La Mesa) - Helix Water District will hold a hearing on proposed rate hikes and increased service charges. The hearing will be on Wednesday, April 26th at 5 p.m.in the Helix Water District board room (7811 University Ave., La Mesa).

If approved, the first phase of the  new rates would take effect May 1st and appear on water bills starting July 1st.

The rate hikes would be phased in over four years.

A study by an independent rate consultant found the increase are needed due to rising operations costs, inflation, capital projects such as replacing aging pipelines, and financial stability.

Changes are proposed to both fixed rates based on meter size and variable charges that assess more to the highest water users. Charts show the proposed rate increases.

For example, the smallest sized 1-inch meter would see fixed rates rise from $56.29 to $67.75 every two months, while a single-family residence would seethe variable charge rise from $5.99 to$6.89, by the end of the four years of rate increases.

Property owners can speak out at the hearing in person or on Zoom, or submit a written protest if they oppose the proposed rate increases.
