October 4, 2015 (San Diego's East County) - Do you believe in ghosts? Is it possible to be a person of faith, a scientifically-minded person, and take ghost stories seriously?

When doors and windows open on their own, when footsteps echo down an empty hall, when shadows move in the darkness and voices whisper when no one is around...what is going on? These are the experiences that stick with us, frighten us, incite our imaginations, and, ultimately, connect us to the past.

Skeptics and believers alike are sure to be captivated by author David J. Schmidt's case study of Point Loma Nazarene University, a private Christian college in California that is filled with tales of poltergeists and apparitions. Originally built by a mysterious group of enigmatic Occultists known as the “Theosophists,” the college is said to be haunted by the group’s enigmatic leader, Madame Tingley.

This is a book of eerie and entertaining tales—but it is much more than that. An examination of these ghost stories brings the author to a greater understanding of life, faith, human narrative, and the wondrous mysteries of creation.

Schmidt's retelling of these chilling stories both terrifies and lifts the shroud of mystery behind the hauntings as he compares them to other spectral stories from around the world. His critical approach to ghost stories as a worldwide phenomenon appeals to skeptics and believers alike. By considering the stories of one “haunted place,” Schmidt poses the question: if ghosts are real in any sense, what are they?

Holy Ghosts

As someone who has experienced some of the strange phenomenon at PLNU as a student, I am so excited about this book. I was wondering if the author might be interested in appearing at our local library in Pine Valley for our monthly writers' workshop or for a Saturday event. I have a vague recollection of writing my experiences at PLNU for someone a while ago; I am assuming it was for this book. I loved being a student at PLNU...so much so that I returned after graduate school to teach freshman comp, research methods, and even Masterpieces of World Literature. PLNU is an amazing place, and its history and paranormal experiences make it all the more intriguing. I am greatly looking forward to reading this book!
