June 10, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – Luscious lemon cakes, cream cakes, doughnuts, muffins, bagels, and more are available once again in Lemon Grove, now that the Lemon Grove Bakery has opened its doors at 3308 Main Street.
On Friday, hungry customers began lining up at 5:30 a.m. for the 6 a.m. opening, and the customers kept on coming all day long.
Helen Ofield with the Lemon Grove Historical Society ventured by shortly after noon, in time to see six people, one with three small children, arrive to shop for some delicious goodies.
“Someone materialized from the kitchen with a platter of tiny cupcakes, just right for little hands, and the Cupcake Brigade was back in action!” she exclaimed, then confessed up, “I bought the three remaining plain donuts (fluffy, tasty), two blueberry bagels for tomorrow's breakfast, and a custard cream pie for diet-shattering purposes.”
This reporter sampled a yummy cream-filled doughnut and plans to head back for lemon bars – a new daily item, manager Kimberly Harrison said.
The new bakery is owned by Burton Restaurants LLC, which also operates Dunkin’ Doughnut franchises locally.
The Lemon Grove Bakery is in the historic Mission Revival building that formerly housed the beloved Grove Pastry Shop. Though the new owners don’t have recipes for Grove Pastry’s famous cream cake or other items, they do have their own versions of some popular items – plus new ones to savor.
“We have a cream cake with a raspberry and custard filling,” she said. “We can do custom wedding cakes.”
Danish pastries and other items will be added soon, she added. There are also specialty coffees, a nice addition.
Also coming soon will be tables and chairs for the outdoor patio. (The city’s new health regulations no longer allow indoor dining tables unless there’s a public restroom, but the bakery’s back room is used for bakery production.)
You will see at least one familiar face behind the counter: Sandra
Anaya used to work at Grove Pastry Shop. Smiling broadly, she says, “It feels like home!”
