April 23, 2014 (La Mesa) – San Diego Police Officer Gilbert Anthony Lorenzo has been arrested by La Mesa Police yesterday for felony domestic violence against his wife. La Mesa Police Chief Matt Nicholas said that the victim did not require medical attention.

Officer Lorenzo, who has worked for SDPD for seven years, was released on $50,000 bail and has been suspended from duty, SDPD Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.

The arrest occurred after a call to SDPD prompted an internal investigation and notification of La Mesa Police, since the alleged violence occurred within La Mesa city limits.

The District Attorney’s office has not filed charges as of publication of this article.

Lorenzo's wife, Tanya, spoke with ECM news partner 10 news to defend her husband as a "good person" who she said doesn't deserve this. She told 10 News that the incident, an argument that got out of control, has been escalated out of proportion.

Asked whether bruises on her cheek were caused by her husband, she declined to answer.

The arrest is the latest in a string of misconduct allegations involving San Diego Police officers, though earlier incidents were under the prior Police Chief's tenure. Zimmerman said she was "disappointed" to hear of Lorenzo's arrest.
