September 13, 2010 (La Mesa) – La Mesa Police officers talked down a suicidal man off a trolley bridge over Baltimore Drive and I-8 yesterday afternoon. The man called police at 3:06 p.m. and told them he intended to jump off the bridge.

“The officers ended up showing up and talking to him, and convinced him to go to the hospital,” LMPD Lt. Matt Nicholass said.

The trolley’s green line was shut down for about half an hour while police officers talked with the despondent man. In such situations, Nicholass noted, “the officers try to convince the person that it’s not the right choice, and that they are there to help them get the help that they need.”

At 3:25 p.m., the man agreed to go with officers to a medical facility, ending the stand-off. “I’m glad he didn’t jump,” Nicholass concluded.
