Arnie Levine aims to raise funds, attract walkers for November 4 event at Del Mar Fairgrounds

October 28, 201 (La Mesa) -- La Mesa resident Arnie Levine was named an Honored Hero for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night® Walk on Friday, November 4 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Arnie, diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1999, will be honored at the 13th Annual two-mile walk that brings together thousands of individuals to raise funds for blood cancer research and patient services.

“There was a point where I had just a few weeks left to live due to a miss diagnosis and luckily, I got second opinions from Dr. John
Taylor, MD and Dr. Charles Kossman, MD who discovered I had the disease. I was diagnosed with high-grade stage 4 and low-grad non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was without a doubt the most challenging point in my life. I went through treatment and chemotherapy, but relapsed in 2004 and again in 2010,” said Levine. “While I’m hoping to be in remission for good this time around, I’m fighting what is considered an incurable cancer so my goal is to spread awareness and get others involved. My wife, Lisa, and I are really looking forward to participating in this year’s walk and hope to see others out there with us!”

Walkers will join together in twilight holding illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to remember those lost to cancer. In addition to the Walk, the evening’s festivities will include music, food and family activities.

“Arnie’s continuously giving back and volunteering to speak at events and educate others on blood cancer despite the fact that he’s in the middle of his own battle,” said Kristin Sacco, Deputy Executive Director of the San Diego/Hawaii Chapter. “He without a doubt is an inspiring person and we’re proud that he’s one of this year’s Honored Heros!”

Individuals can donate to Arnie’s fundraising
page or sign up to join his team here.  Check-In is at 6:00 p.m. with the opening ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m. and the Walk starting at 7:30 p.m. For more information on this year’s event, visit www.lightthenight.org/sd/.
