March 27, 2018 (La Mesa) – Maxwell House of Books, an independent, used book retail book store in La Mesa, will host a book signing and lecture featuring La Mesa historian and author Jim Newland discussing his latest book on the history of Grossmont Hospital. The event will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 29. Maxwell House of Books is located at 8285 La Mesa Blvd., in the heart of the historic La Mesa Downtown Village. According to Craig Maxwell, book store owner, proceeds from books sold that evening will be donated to the La Mesa Historical Socie ty.

Newland’s latest book, “Grossmont Hospital: A Legacy of Community Service,” chronicles the history of Grossmont Hospital as one of the most revered local community institutions in La Mesa and the East County. The La Mesa hospital, owned by the citizens of the East San Diego County region, opened in 1955. The 153-page book, published by The History Press, is available in local book stores and can be ordered online now through the publisher’s website, as well as Amazon.

The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), an East County regional public agency, assisted Newland and the publisher with the book’s research, providing historic photographs and documents. Several other local residents, including former and current doctors, GHD board members and Sharp HealthCare leaders, are listed as contributors.

Newland, author of “Around Mt. Helix,” “La Mesa” and “Cleveland National Forest,” partnered with Grossmont Hospital and GHD in chronicle the inspiring story of this iconic institution. The longtime La Mesa resident is past president of the La Mesa Historical Society and has served on the La Mesa Planning Commission since 2014.
