January 1, 2011 (Alpine) – Hit by a double whammy of storm damage followed by thousands of dollars in veterinary bills, the Alpine-based big cat rescue facility Lions Tigers & Bears is seeking help from the public in both cash donations and a wish list of items needed.

“We have had a challenging week at LTB, with the tremendous rains and the flooding that followed,” founder Bobbi Brink wrote in an e-mail to members. Although volunteers pitched in to help repair flood damage, the facility was also struck by additional challenges including Crash, a horse that required hospitalization for a mysterious illness that may have been a spider bite or contaminated feed hay, Brink said, adding that the bills have exceeded $4,200.

“Our veterinary expenses were very high this year, and our reserve account is depleted,” Brink said. “We would appreciate any assistance you can provide to help us. If you can make a donation on Crash's behalf, please call our office at 619-659-8078 or respond to this e-mail. You can also make a donation through PayPal at our website, www.lionstigersandbears.org.

The facility is also still seeking funds to complete construction on a larger enclosure for Liberty, a black bear yearling brought in by Fish & Wildlife officials after it was found raiding campsites in a neighboring county. The bear faced euthanasia if Brink had not taken it in.

Lions, Tigers and Bears is a 93-acre, federally and state licensed non-profit 501c3 rescue facility primarily designed as a safe haven for unwanted and abused exotic cats.

In addition to cash donations, the facility has compiled a wish list of items needed:
