MAJOR FIRES BURNING ACROSS COUNTY

Update 3:50 p.m.:  

 

The Felipe Fire at Banner grade is now 50 acres on the east side of S-2 near Julian, spreading rapidly, Cal-Fire reports.  The Mission Valley Fire's spread has been slowed.  The fire near Lakeside is now contained and was confined to a drainage ditch.  New fires are burning near Campo Railroad in Campo and east of Shelter Valley, but both are lightning fires that should be contained soon, Cal-Fire batallion chief  Nick Schuler informed ECM.

 

July 15, 2010 3:05 p.m. --  Major brush fires are burning in Mission Valley and across multiple backcountry communities, including several sparked by wildfires.  Scroll down for details and please post any updates you may have in our comments section below.

A three-alarm brush fire in Mission Valley threatens structures including major hotels. La Quinta is being evacuated and Hilton is also in danger from the blaze on Camino Del Rio South. The fire is spreading rapidly.

Cal-Fire reports multiple lightning fires are burning in Warner Springs, Scissors Crossing and San Felipe areas; these are burning slowly with little wind; airtankers are dropping retardant to contain the spread until firefighters can hike into the area. The Scissors Crossing Fire has reached 25 acres.

 

 

Incident Page Network reports a new fire at Highway 79 and Oak Grove is seven acres but has potential to reach 100 or more and is spreading rapidly; no structures are yet threatened.

 

ECM has also received word from reporter Dennis Richarson of two more fires, one on Banner Grade S2 between Julian and Borrego, the other at the base of the Lake Jennings Dam.
