February 8, 2011 (Spring Valley) – Curtis Haynes, 45, was shot four times after refusing to give up his wallet to a pair of robbers while walking outside the San Miguel Fire Station, in 3255 Helix Street in Spring Valley. He was struck in the torso, arm and both legs during the attack, which occurred around 7:03 p.m. last night.

"Members of crew thought they heard shots," said San Miguel Fire public information officer Leonard Villareal. "Moments later the front door bell range and it was the shooting victim seeking help. The crew brought the victim in, started emergency medical treatment, notified the Sheriff’s office and secured the station."

For about three hours, the station and the area around it became a crime scene, he added, while officers made sure there were no other victims and searched for the suspects. "Once treated and outside conditions were deemed safe the victim was transported."

The suspects were last seen running northbound on Helix Street.

Haynes was transported in stable condition. His injuries appear to be non-threatening, according to Sergeant G. Hampton with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the crime.
