October 4, 2011 (Poway) – Poway resident Sean Webber, 30, has been arrested after leading authorities on a 38-minute, 23-mile chase. He is accused of stealing a Senior Volunteer Patrol (SVP) car while two San Diego Sheriff’s volunteers were helping with traffic control for the Tour of Parkway bicycle event.

A deputy spotted the marked Sheriff’s vehicle within a minute after the theft and tried to stop the suspect, Sgt. Daniel Vengler said. When Webber failed to stop, a pursuit ensued.

“Webber led Sheriff’s deputies and San Diego Police officers out of the City of Poway and toward the coast,” Sgt. Vengler said. “Deputies and officers broke off from the pursuit and allowed the Sheriff’s helicopter (ASTREA) to follow the stolen vehicle and coordinate the deployment of a tire deflation device in an attempt to disable the car.” California Highway Patrol *(CHP) units also assisted by closing intersections to cross traffic.

The suspect drove to the end of a cul-de-sac in Carmel Valley, where he drove through a fence to get onto another street.

“He drove back toward patrol units from San Diego Police Department, CHP, and the Sheriff's Department who had converged,” Sgt. Vengler noted. “Webber jumped out of the slow moving car and surrendered to the deputies and officers. The stolen car came to rest on the shoulder of the road.”

There were no injuries and the only property damage was sustained when Webber drove through the fence, causing damage to the fence and the SVP car.

Webber was booked into jail on multiple criminal charges including vehicle theft,
and evading arrest.
