MANDMA LEADS SDSU MEN'S TENNIS IN 4-1 LOSS TO UTAH STATE

April 8, 2023 (Logan, Utah) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team faced the Utah Aggies in Logan, Utah, on Saturday, April 8. Sophomore Alexander Mandma won his singles match to get SDSU on the board, but it was all Aggies everywhere else in a 4-1 final.

The Scarlet and Black drop to 1-12 this season and 0-3 in conference play, while Utah State stays a perfect 7-0 at home with a 9-11 overall record and 2-2 in conference play.

“We played a hard-fought doubles point today, especially on the top court” Head Coach Gene Carswell had to say after today’s match. “We’ll use today’s experience to help us move forward into our next conference matches, which will be under very similar conditions.”

Mandma (3-5) played on the No. 3 court against Stijn Paardekooper and dropped the first set 6-1. He stormed back to take the second 6-2 and won the third with a 6-0 bagel.

Playing on the top court without Johannes Seeman in the singles lineup, Chikaya Sato (3-8) drew David Cierny. Sato was bested in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Bora Sengul (0-9) faced Bodin Zarkovic on the second court. He fell 6-3, 6-3.

Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (1-7) played on the No. 5 court against Roko Savin and lost 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, on the top court, the team of Seeman and Sato faced Cierny and Zarkovic. The match went to a tiebreaker with the Aggies ending up on top 7-6 (7-4). On the second court, Mandma and Sengul battled Paardekooper and Pinheiro but fell 6-3. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Mathieu Josserand went up against Jack Ninteman and Javier Ruiz on court No. 3. The Aztecs trailed 6-5 when Utah State clinched the doubles point.

San Diego State returns to The Mesa for a matchup with Nevada on Senior Day next Saturday, April 16 at noon.
