November 13, 2015 (El Cajon)--Anticipation of a new hotel in El Cajon is growing as officials have completed the sale of properties at the northeast corner of Magnolia Avenue and Rea Avenue for developers of the Marriott Courtyard Hotel. The 88,000-square foot hotel will feature 120 rooms, a swimming pool, outdoor dining areas, a business center, two meeting rooms, and two commercial lease spaces on the ground floor.

The first phase of this construction project will be the demolition of the existing buildings on the lots.  But, before this begins, the El Cajon Police Department and the Heartland Fire & Rescue plan to use the abandoned structures as an opportunity for valuable training. The Police Department’s SWAT team will hold exercises, while Heartland Fire & Rescue will hone their firefighting and search & rescue skills.  This training is expected to take place in approximately one week.  When training is complete, the demolition of the buildings will begin.  An official groundbreaking ceremony for the new hotel is expected to take place in January.

A press release from the city states, “The development of the East County's first high quality business hotel by a renowned company, such as Marriott, is a huge economic win for the City of El Cajon and it will be a key aspect of its Downtown.  The hotel is expected to bring new jobs to the City and inevitably draw additional business investment.”

The El Cajon City Council gave their final approval on plans to build a new hotel at their June 23, 2015, City Council meeting.  The Marriott is scheduled to open for business in late 2016.

The City is currently discussing a second major hotel, near Parkway Plaza, with developers representing the Hilton Hotel corporation.
