November 18, 2011 (Alpine) – A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today for Devon Sambhi, 16, and his father, Sunil Sambhi. The service will be held at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., according to Tyler Smittle, general manager of the Ayres Lodge where Natalia Sambhi, mother and wife of the deceased, works.

The teen was killed on November 10 after a vehicle driven by his mother rolled off I-8 and onto Old Highway 80. The car may have had a tire problem, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Alpine residents were on their way to Granite Hills High School, where Devon was a student.

His distraught father died later in the day in a high-speed collision on I-8 near the same place where Devon was killed. According to the CHP, the crash was believed to be intentional. Two people from Imperial County in a vehicle struck by Sunil Sambhi have been treated and and released with minor to moderate injuries.

All are welcome to attend today’s service, according to Smittle, the Alpine Community Network reports.

A donation has been established to help the family. Donations may be made through a bereavement account at Chase Bank, 1271 Tavern Road, in Alpine.
