July 3, 2011 (Lemon Grove) – Lon Scully, 74, was struck and killed around 2 a.m. Friday morning while attempting to cross the southbound lanes of State Route 125 north of Spring Street in La Mesa when he was struck by a silver Hyundai sedan, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office reports.

The accident severed the victim’s legs and hurled his torso through the windshield, where it became lodged in the front seat, CHP spokesman Brian Pennings said, La Mesa’s Patch.com reported.

“He was pretty traumatized,” Pennings said of the driver, Harold Mittleman. Mittleman drove home to his residence at 7560 North Avenue in Lemon Grove with the body in his car and called authorities. Police and fire personnel responded and confirmed death at the scene.

It is unknown why Scully was walking on the freeway. He was a resident of La Mesa, according to the Medical Examiner, however Patch.com indicates an online search listed an address in Spring Valley.

The driver has indicated he was unable to swerve to avoid a collision and the crash has been ruled accidental.  According to CBS news, tests indicated the driver, 46, was not under the influence or drugs or alcohol.
