July 12, 2016 (El Cajon) - At 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Heartland Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to reports of a vehicle accident at the intersection of Greenfield Drive and the I-8 underpass in El Cajon.

Upon the arrival of fire crews, they discovered six vehicles involved with multiple victims trapped in vehicles. An MCI (Mass Casualty Incident) was declared, which alerts local area hospitals that multiple patients are being treated at an emergency incident.

Not Just H-F-R

All agencies in the Central Fire Zone daily rely on automatic-aid to ensure the closest (available) resources are dispatched to emergencies. Due to location and high call volume at the time, resources from Lakeside (E1, R3, M2) and Santee (M4) also assisted Heartland Fire-Rescue (E8, T6, T11, B3) on this incident. Fire agencies in the "Heartland" area of the county (now called the Central Zone) were truly pioneers in the concept of automatic-aid which provides immediate, pre-planned operational assistance regardless of jurisdictional boundary.
