September 27, 2017 (San Diego) - Jeff Bryson, a retired San Diego State University psychology professor, was named chairperson of the 2017-2018 San Diego County Grand Jury, which began service on July 10, 2017.

The jury members, six women and 13 men, were drawn by lot from 90 volunteer applicants.  They serve for one year under a state constitution mandate that counties establish the full-time "watchdog" panels to look into the workings of city and county governmental agencies.

Bryson, a 48-year resident of the county, wanted to contribute to the well-being of the community.  "The Grand Jury is dedicated to keeping the county an efficient, effective and progressive community, a voice for citizens to be heard by the large, sometimes impersonal agencies that keep the county moving," Bryson said. "It is a demanding, but important and fulfilling job and a great way to play a role in keeping San Diego great."

The members of this year's Grand Jury come from a vast variety of occupations and life experiences.  Among them are college graduates in such specialties as literacy for children, neurology, philosophy, business administration and foreign trade, teaching and education administration.  Others have post-graduate degrees in education, Spanish, public administration, business administration, industrial/organizational psychology, European integration and physics.

The military is represented by former active-duty servicemen: a captain in the United States Navy, a retired United States Army colonel who graduated from the United States Military Academy, a former 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper who served in Germany following World War II and a retired commanding officer of an F14 squadron and carrier airwing.

Two members are attorneys; one member is an immigrant from the Middle East who became a long-time worker in the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office.  Rounding out the panel are a specialist in medical devices, a pediatric neurologist, a police analyst in energy, environment, natural resources and industrial competitiveness, a newspaper reporter and copy editor, a credit manager for a national corporation, a communication and computer science expert for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/ICE and Border Patrol, a supervising probation officer, a deputy district attorney and a deputy public defender.

"With such a diverse panel, I hope that we can bring creative, lasting solutions to the challenges facing San Diego County," Bryson said.
