December 24, 2009 – Local groups are pitching in to help the family of a Border Patrol Agent involved in a shooting that made international news. Early this morning, holiday gifts for the Ramos family, including four children, were stolen out of their vehicle at a La Quinta Inn during a stopover en route to El Paso. Several other vehicles were reportedly burglarized as well.

Border Patrol Agent Ignacio Ramos was freed from a federal detention center, where he spent two years in solitary confinement, after President George W. Bush commuted his sentence for the shooting and wounding of an alleged drug smuggler on the Texas-Mexico border in a case that sparked headlines and controversy in the U.S. and Mexico.

East County Magazine spoke this morning with Max (who asked that his last name not be published), founder of the www.AgentRamos.com, while he was out shopping with Ramos’ wife, Monica, and son, Ryan, 12.

“This is their first Christmas back together; that’s what makes this so hard,” he said. In addition to Ryan, the couple has three additional children: Jacob, 10, Erin, 16, and Brittany, 18.

Minutemen groups in Campo and San Diego, which rallied in support of Ramos previously, are pitching in to replace gifts for the family. Donations to help the family may be made online at the Agent Ramos website.
