January 1, 2010 (San Diego) — The YMCA of San Diego County will host its 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Dignity Award Breakfast on Friday, Jan. 15 from 6:30 – 9:30 a.m. at the Town & Country Resort Hotel, 500 Hotel Circle North, San Diego. This milestone YMCA of San Diego County event will be highlighted by keynote speaker, Rev. Samuel "Billy" Kyles, a longtime leader in the civil rights movement and pastor of the Monumental Baptist Church in Memphis, TN. Rev. Kyles was one of King’s closest aides and witnessed his murder.
Guests will hear Rev. Kyles’ story of how he persuaded Dr. King to come to Memphis, TN to encourage community support for striking sanitation workers. The last hour of Dr. King's life was spent with Kyles at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.
The breakfast will not only memorialize and celebrate Dr. King; it will also recognize community leaders of the past, present and future including this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award winner.
This award is given each year to a person who most exemplifies the work and character of Dr. King. The honorees of the past 20 years encompass outstanding qualities of volunteerism, philanthropy and activism in the San Diego community.
In addition to Rev. Kyles, the more than 1000 people who plan to attend will enjoy the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir of San Diego and the Buffalo Soldiers Color Guard.
