May 25, 2010 (San Diego) – Voters, be wary. A slate mailer titled “Election Education Guide” claims to list official endorsements of the California Democratic Party for statewide candidates and propositions. But the deceptive paid political flyer is not affiliated with the Democrats. While some positions listed accurately reflect the Party’s endorsements, others falsely misrepresent the Democratic Party’s position.

For the Democratic Party’s official list of endorsements, click here.

The “Election Education Guide” slate mailer contains the following misrepresentations:

• Falsely claims the party endorsed two conservative Republican judges, Craig Candelore and Jim Miller, Jr. The party has in fact endorsed the following judicial candidates: Lantz Lewis, Bob Longstreth, and Joel Wohlfeil.

• Falsely claims the party endorsed Bill Gore for Sheriff. The party made no endorsement in the race.

• Falsely claims the party endorsed Janice Hahn for Lieutenant Governor,Tom Torlakson for Superintendent of Public Education, Alberto Torrico for Attorney General, Mary Christian-Heising for State Board of Equalization. The Party made no endorsement in those races, where multiple Democratic candidates are running.

• Falsely claims Democrats endorse an initiative to tax and regulate marijuana (The Democratic Party has taken no position on the measure, which will appear on November’s ballot)

The flyer lists many candidates who, while endorsed by the Party, were unaware that their names had been listed on the mailer. It also lists five propositions.

The mailer identifies the following individuals and groups who paid to be included on the deceptive slate mailer: judicial candidate Jim Miller, Jr., Sheriff Bill Gore, Assessor-Record-Clerk candidate David L. Butler, and backers of Proposition 15, a fair elections measure.
