August 31, 2010 (La Mesa) – A male bicyclist sustained serious injuries after slamming into a trolley at the intersection of Severin and Amaya drives in La Mesa. La Mesa Police dispatch received multiple 911 calls starting at 5:22 p.m. of the cyclist down on the tracks.

According to LMPD, the cyclist was northbound on Severin approaching Amaya and the Trolley Crossing. The trolley arms were down for traffic in both directions, since there was a westbound trolley approaching. The bicyclist rode northbound into the southbound lane and went around the trolleyarm, apparently in an effort to beat the approaching trolley.

He struck the side of the trolley and sustained multiple broken bones. The cyclist was found unconscious at the scene. He was transported to the trauma center at Sharp Memorial Hospital. His current status is unknown and his name is being withheld until family members can be notified.
