PARTY FOR OUR PLANET: 2ND ANNUAL EAST COUNTY EARTH DAY MAY 1 ON MT. HELIX

April 15, 2011 (Mt. Helix) -- Don't want to fight the crowds at Earth Day in Balboa Park? Now there's a local alternative.  Earth Day is coming to East San Diego County on Sunday, May 1 from 11 am – 3 pm.

 

This free family-fun event will be held in the Mt. Helix Amphitheater, 4901 Mt. Helix Drive in La Mesa. Co-sponsored by the Jarrett Meeker Foundation and Mt. Helix Park in partnership with the La Mesa- Spring Valley School District, East County Earth Day will feature vendors whose missions are environmentally friendly along with live music and a variety of speakers.

 

Groups ranging from the California Wolf Center and Lions, Tigers and Bears, to I Love a Clean San Diego and Lakeside River Parks Conservancy will be participating. Unused prescription eye glasses will be collected for use in third world countries by the La Mesa Lions Club. Educational speakers, music, food and free children’s activities complete the program.

 

                             Featured speakers include as follows:

 

11:30 am Bill Tall, City Farmers, “How to grow ALL your own food”
12:15 pm Marion Stacey, Hummingbird Rescue, “Hummingbirds in our area”
1:30 pm Zachary Pannier, President of the San Diego Green Building Council, “RE:Green, Your Role in Transforming the Built Environment”
2:15 pm Deborah Jones, icommute, “Alternative Commuting Choices in San Diego”
Parking and shuttles will be available at the San Miguel Fire Station, 10105 Vivera in La Mesa, as well as from Grossmont High School.

 

East County Earth Day 2011 Entertainment Schedule

11:00 am – 12:00 pm   David Rouillard
David is a native musician who teaches instrumental music and has a long history of performing in San Diego. He is now re-introducing his acoustic guitar solo act. In his repertoire you will travel from the 70’s to today with hits from the Pink Floyd, Beatles, Green Day and Cold Play in a rock/folk style.
 
12:00 pm -12:30 pm and 1:00 pm -1:30 pm Monte Vista High School Jazz Ensemble
The Monte Vista High School Jazz Ensemble performs at school functions and community events. The Music Director at Monte Vista is Ms. Linda Thompson.
 
12:30 pm -1:00 pm and 1:30 pm -2:00 pm   Grossmont High School Jazz Ensemble
The Grossmont High School Jazz Ensemble focuses largely on music theory in an accelerated course. Members study and play all forms of jazz. Marty Bassett is the director of this band, which performs numerous gigs and at jazz festivals throughout the year.
 
2:00 pm -3:00 pm Tim Egan's Band
The Tim Egan's Band is a local performing group, with Tim Egan on vocals, Paul Grinvalsky on harmony and guitar and Teri Hoffman on harmony and percussion. The music genre includes classic rock/folk and originals. The trio regularly performs at different venues in downtown San Diego, La Gran Tapa and East County coffee houses. They all have strong East County roots
