December 18, 2011 (La Mesa) – The Sacramento Bee called the Helix Highlanders “near perfect”, describing the football team as “a mixture of speed, power and fury…storming to a 28-10 halftime lead, scoring three touchdowns in a blur with their array of dazzling skill players sprinting downfield.”
Ken Stone, editor of La Mesa Patch.com, was at the big game in Loomis, north of Sacramento. Topping what Stone dubbed a “magical season” with a 13-1 record, the team squared off against the Del Oro Golden Eagles, a formidable force with a 13-2 record.
“I’m at a loss for words,” Helix coach Tony Starr told La Mesa Patch.
Speaking with MaxPrep.com, Starr lavished praise on his players. “It’s the best offensive and defensive lines I’ve ever coached,” Starr said, Patch.com reported.
Brandon Lewis threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns. The Golden Eagles scored their final points with 35 seconds left in the game—too little, too late as the Helix High School team from La Mesa cinched the state championship.
