April 17, 2018 (San Diego) – A driver who exited his vehicle after striking and killing a deer on northbound State Route 125 south of State Route 54 before dawn died after falling off an overpass into a canyon.
California Highway Patrol’s dispatch was notified of the collision at 4:39 a.m. Upon arrival, CHP units found a black 2007 Audi A3 that had crashed into the deer in the right-hand lane.
“It appears that the driver exited his vehicle after hitting the deer. Somehow the driver ended up over the side and dropped down approximately 50 feet. As a result of falling, the driver sustained fatal injuries,” says Officer Jake Sanchez with the CHP.
Friends told 10 News the victim was Martin Lapisch, 44, a Chula Vista resident who was a husband and father of a 15-month-old baby.
“He was a new dad with big dreams, whose life was cut short after a terrible, early morning accident," a close friend of the victim told 10 News. Lapsich was reportedly on his way to work after an early morning workout at a gym.
