June 19, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – Natural Pet Products is recalled six brands of dry dog foods due to possible Salmonella contamination. The brands are Innova, EVO, California Natural, Healthwise, Karma, and Mother Nature. The recall includes foods for dogs, cats and ferrets including dry food, bars and treats.

Salmonella poses risks to pet owners handling the foods, as well as to pets, if owners don’t wash hands after handling contaminated products. Symptoms in both humans and animals include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping/pain, and fever.

In rare cases Salmonella can cause more serious problems including urinary tract symptoms, muscle or joint pain, endocarditis, eye problems and arterial infections.

If your pet has consumed a recalled product and has symptoms, contact your veterinarian.  Throw away contaminated products or return to retailers.

The recalled foods were sold through numerous outlets including major retailers and veterinarians. For more details and a full list of recalled products, see:    http://www.californianaturalpet.com/voluntary_recall/Natura%20FINAL%20Press%20Release%20061813.pdf
