“Tonight at 5:24 p.m., three engines companies under the direction of Battalion Chief John Butz responded,” Cal-Fire battalion chief Nick Schuler said yesterday. “When firefighters arrived, the aircraft was in multiple pieces.”

The pilot and his son were air-lifted out to hospitals with serious injuries, Schuler reported initially.

Lt. Marco Garmo with the San Diego Sheriff’s office told East County Magazine that the pilot suffered head injuries.

“They were flying a World War II Trainer, no lights, no radio,” he said, adding that the victims are from Lake Elsinore. “They were trying to fly from French Valley to Borrego, but they got confused and hit an air direction pole at the glider port.”
