June 30, 2015 (El Cajon)—A suspected vehicle thief who tried to ram an El Cajon Police officer with a stolen vehicle has been arrested and charged with assault.  The suspect, 27-year-old Jose Maldonado of El Cajon, was bitten on the leg by a police dog after a pursuit that covered four miles from El Cajon into Spring Valley.

Officer Dan Thompson and his canine partner tried to stop the vehicle in the 1000 block of Avocado Blvd. in El Cajon at 12:30 a.m., but the driver failed to stop and attempted to flee.  A record check on the license showed the vehicle had been stolen in El Cajon.

After a brief pursuit into Spring Valley, the driver drove at the officer as the offer was exiting his police car. The officer was able to evade a collision and continue his pursuit of the suspect. The suspect then struck a curb, disabling the vehicle he was driving at Campo and Granada.

The suspect fled on foot. Officer Thompson sent his police dog after the suspect, who was bitten on the leg and arrested, said Lt. Walt Miller, Patrol Watch Commander for El Cajon Police. The suspect was transported by medics to a hospital for a minor bite wound. After treatment, he was booked into County Jail on charges of assault on a police officer, felony evasion, and auto theft.
