October 26, 2024 (Poway) – The Poway Symphony Orchestra will open its 21st concert season
with “A Trip to Spain with The Romeros,” presenting a program of lively Spanish-inspired music
and featuring the world-renowned Romeros guitar quartet. The concert will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at the Poway Center for Performing Arts.
The Romeros will be joining the Poway Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz for four guitars and orchestra. The concerto was written in 1967 specifically for the Romeros and celebrates their ties to Andalusia with typical Spanish rhythms, themes and melodies, while allowing the guitarists to shine individually and as a group.
The concert, under the direction of John LoPiccolo, conductor and music director for PSO, will also include Hector Berlioz’s vibrant and adventurous Le Corsaire Overture and Georges Bizet’s Carmen Suites 1 and 2, highlighting the drama and allure of one of the world’s most famous operas.
“I can’t think of a better way to open our 2024-2025 concert season than with the grand masters of the guitar, the iconic Romeros," said LoPiccolo. “Their rich history and talent as a
family of virtuoso classical guitarists is absolutely remarkable. We are so honored to share the stage with them. Their performance of the Rodrigo concerto promises to be a rare and exhilarating fusion of passion and precision. This entire concert is going to be spectacular.”
Known to millions as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros were founded in 1958 by the legendary Celedonio Romero with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel. Today the Quartet consists of the second (Celin & Pepe) and third generations (Lito & Celino). They have gained global popularity with audiences around the world and performed extensively throughout the
United States, including multiple occasions at the White House.
