April 12 (Sunday, 3:00 pm)Book signing of Behind Every Great Man by Marlene Wagman-Geller at at Barnes and Nobel Otay Ranch.

The premise of the volume is to profile forty women whose lives have been regulated to a mere historic footnote as they were lost in the considerable shadow cast by their alpha male spouses. A sampling of the historic ladies profiled: from literature, Mrs. Oscar Wilde, from film, Mrs. Alfred Hitchcock, from music, Mrs. Robin Gibb, from politics, Mrs. Mahatma Gandhi.

The opening quotation by Virginia Woolf embodies its concept, “For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” It is my hope that my book will take these remarkable women from under the cloak of anonymity, to make the slogan “Behind every great man” more than merely a girl-power chant.

Scent of Triumph: When French perfumer Danielle Bretancourt steps aboard a luxury ocean liner, leaving her son behind in Poland with his grandmother, she has no idea that her life is about to change forever. The year is 1939, and the declaration of war on the European continent soon threatens her beloved family, scattered across many countries. Traveling through London and Paris into occupied Poland, Danielle searches desperately for her the remains of her family, relying on the strength and support of Jonathan Newell-Grey, a young captain. Finally, she is forced to gather the fragments of her impoverished family and flee to America. She vows to begin life anew, in 1940s Los Angeles.

There, through determination and talent, she rises high from meager jobs in her quest for success as a perfumer and fashion designer to Hollywood elite. Set between privileged lifestyles and gritty realities, Scent of Triumph is one woman’s story of courage, spirit, and resilience.

French Coast: Serena has the job she's always dreamed of and Chase, the man her heart never dared to. As a new editor at Vogue, she bags the biggest interview of the year with Yvette Renault, the infamous former editor of French Vogue, in The Carlton-InterContinental Hotel during the Cannes Film Festival. She eagerly jets off to France while Chase stays home, working with her father, a former senator, on his upcoming mayoral campaign.

Everything feels unbelievably perfect...until the hotel loses her reservation hours before her big interview. Serena fears that she'll have to go home without her story, but then she meets Zoe, a quirky young woman staying in the suite below Yvette's who invites Serena to stay with her. Serena is grateful for her mysterious roommate's generosity, but it seems that there's more to her story than meets the eye. To make matters worse, soon after arriving in Cannes, Serena learns a shocking secret about her parents' marriage, and it isn't long before she begins to question her own relationship. With her deadline looming and pressure mounting, Serena will have to use her investigative journalism skills, new friendships, and a little luck to get her life and love back on track. Fast paced and impeccably written, French Coast will draw readers in to the intoxicating world of the Cote D'Azur. Hughes' beautiful prose and sense imagery bring the food, fashion, and feel of the ocean to life in this audacious new novel.

April 16 (Thursday, 11:00 am)Southwestern College Guest Writers Series 2015 Spring Literary Festival will present an anthology and four great poets from our San Diego region, including our very own Heather Eudy (SWC Professor of English Composition) in Student Union East.

Lantern Tree: Four Books of Poems is a luminous collaboration that explores the lanterns of relation, journey, spirit, desire, loss, and home. At once disparate and entangled, the voices found here are those of Chris Baron in Under the Broom Tree, Heather Eudy in Bills of Lading, Cali Linfor in A Book of Ugly Things, and Sabrina Youmans in Pacific Standard Time.

Marilyn Chin writes of Lantern Tree: “There is so much love in these four books. They tell ecstatic and transcendent tales about the diversity of Southern California lives. Both magical and local, the four voices merge into a splendid swirl. And the reader is catapulted into a rich mecca that includes both the sacred and the profane: of “beltless” romances and the “opening star” of a persimmon, of trickster deer women, barflies and hills of Quetzalcoatl’s rainbow yucca, of electrical currents and hips holding the endless light, and ample doses of Torah lessons and grandma’s latkes. The landscapes/inscapes are both spiritual and tactile. And we witness the Whitmanesque melding of body and soul—where the brilliant images shout out persistent invitations: yes, this is a neighborhood party that you don’t want to miss!”

April 18 (Saturday, 3:00 pm)Kate Mulgrew will sign copies of Born with Teeth purchased from Mysterious Galaxy on Saturday,

Raised by unconventional Irish Catholics who knew "how to drink, how to dance, how to talk, and how to stir up the devil," Kate Mulgrew grew up with poetry and drama in her bones. But in her mother, a would-be artist burdened by the endless arrival of new babies, young Kate saw the consequences of a dream deferred. Determined to pursue her own no matter the cost, at 18 she left her small Midwestern town for New York, where, studying with the legendary Stella Adler, she learned the lesson that would define her as an actress: "Use it," Adler told her. Whatever disappointment, pain, or anger life throws in your path, channel it into the work.

It was a lesson she would need. At twenty-two, just as her career was taking off, she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. Having already signed the adoption papers, she was allowed only a fleeting glimpse of her child. As her star continued to rise, her life became increasingly demanding and fulfilling, a whirlwind of passionate love affairs, life-saving friendships, and bone-crunching work. Through it all, Mulgrew remained haunted by the loss of her daughter, until, two decades later, she found the courage to face the past and step into the most challenging role of her life, both on and off screen.

We know Kate Mulgrew for the strong women she's played – Captain Janeway on Star Trek; the tough-as-nails "Red" on Orange is the New Black. Now, we meet the most inspiring and memorable character of all: herself. By turns irreverent and soulful, laugh-out-loud funny and heart-piercingly sad, BORN WITH TEETH is the breathtaking memoir of a woman who dares to live life to the fullest, on her own terms.

Carlsbad Reads Together brings community members together and engages them in discussion about the same book at the same time.

April 19 (Sunday, 11:30 am)Joshua Davis signs Spare Parts: Four Undocumented Teenagers, One Ugly Robot, and The Battle for the American Dream at the La Habra Library. Spare Parts, recently released as a motion picture, is the story of four undocumented Mexican- American teens from West Phoenix who, ten years ago, represented their underfunded high school in a national NASA sponsored robotics competition in California. These four teens risked the threat of deportation and other obstacles; follow them as they battle for the American dream.

In 2004, four Latino teenagers arrived at the Marine Advanced Technology Education Robotics Competition at the University of California, Santa Barbara. They were born in Mexico but raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where they attended an underfunded public high school. No one had ever suggested to Oscar, Cristian, Luis, or Lorenzo that they might amount to much – but two inspiring science teachers had convinced these impoverished, undocumented kids from the desert who had never even seen the ocean that they should try to build an underwater robot.

And build a robot they did. Their robot wasn't pretty, especially compared to those of the competition. They were going up against some of the best collegiate engineers in the country, including a team from MIT backed by a $10,000 grant from ExxonMobil. The Phoenix teenagers had scraped together less than $1,000 and built their robot out of scavenged parts. This was never a level comp became a key inspiration to the DREAMers movement – will go on to include first-generation college graduations, deportation, bean-picking in Mexico, and service in Afghanistan.

April 20 (Monday, 7:00 pm)Upstart Crow Book Club on the 3rd Monday of the Month. Join us to discuss: UNBROKEN by Laura Hillenbrand. Book Club Members also receive 25% off the selected book of the month.

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

April 21 (Tuesday, 7:30 pm)Warwick's is hosting bestselling author Les Standiford on Thursday, April 21st at 7:30pm to present his insightful new book, Water to the Angels: William Mulholland, His Monumental Aqueduct, and the Rise of Los Angeles.

Les Standiford is the bestselling author of twenty books, including Bringing Adam Home, the John Deal mystery series, and the works of narrative history The Man Who Invented Christmas (a New York Times Editor's Choice) and Last Train to Paradise. He is the director of the creative writing program at Florida International University in Miami. This event is free and open to the public. Reserved Seating is available. Only books purchased from Warwick's will be signed. Please call the Warwick's Book Dept. (858) 454-0347 for details.

The author of Last Train to Paradise tells the story of the largest public water project ever created – William Mulholland's Los Angeles aqueduct – a story of Gilded Age ambition, hubris, greed, and one determined man who's vision shaped the future and continues to impact us today.

In 1907, Irish immigrant William Mulholland conceived and built one of the greatest civil engineering feats in history: the aqueduct that carried water 223 miles from the Sierra Nevada mountains to Los Angeles – allowing this small, resource-challenged desert city to grow into a modern global metropolis. Drawing on new research, Les Standiford vividly captures the larger-then-life engineer and the breathtaking scope of his six-year, $23 million project that would transform a region, a state, and a nation at the dawn of its greatest century.

With energy and colorful detail, Water to the Angels brings to life the personalities, politics, and power – including bribery, deception, force, and bicoastal financial warfare – behind this dramatic event. At a time when the importance of water is being recognized as never before – considered by many experts to be the essential resource of the twenty-first century – Water to the Angels brings into focus the vigor of a fabled era, the might of a larger than life individual, and the scale of a priceless construction project, and sheds critical light on a past that offers insights for our future.

April 22 (Wednesday, 7:30 pm)Warwick's is hosting author Brian Fagan who will present his book, The Intimate Bond: How Animals Shaped Human History. Brian Fagan is emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has decades of experience at sea and is the author of several titles for sailors, including the widely praised The Cruising Guide to Central and Southern California. He lives in Santa Barbara, California. This event is free and open to the public. Reserved Seating is available. Only books purchased from Warwick's will be signed.

Through an in-depth analysis of six truly transformative human-animal relationships, Fagan shows how our habits and our very way of life were considerably and irreversibly altered by our intimate bond with animals. Among other stories, Fagan explores how herding changed human behavior; how the humble donkey helped launch the process of globalization; and how the horse carried a hearty band of nomads across the world and toppled the emperor of China. With penetrating insight, Fagan shows how the powerful bond between Homo Sapiens and other species has determined the course of civilizations, and shaped human character.

April 22 (Wednesday, 4:00 pm) — The San Diego Book Discussion Group is led by Fearless Leader Christine. Participation is open to all readers; readers need not have completed a particular book to attend – it’s the perfect opportunity to branch out and find new favorites! Attendees receive 20% off of the current book club selection, The Martian by Andy Weir. Patrick’s review notes, “the whole novel reads like a heartwarming/stopping action movie ... and I loved every page-turning, non-cynical, hero-filled word of it.”

Description: Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive – and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills – and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit – he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

About the Author: Andy Weir was first hired as a programmer for a national laboratory at age fifteen and has been working as a software engineer ever since. He is also a lifelong space nerd and a devoted hobbyist of subjects like relativistic physics, orbital mechanics, and the history of manned spaceflight. "The Martian" is his first novel.

Praise for The Martian: "Brilliant...a celebration of human ingenuity [and] the purest example of real-science sci-fi for many years...Utterly compelling." – Wall Street Journal

"Gripping...[features] a hero who can solve almost every problem while still being hilarious. It's hard not to be swept up in [Weir's] vision and root for every one of these characters. Grade: A."AVClub.com

He was an introvert who only felt safe in a world of books. She came from China and maintained her ties to her culture. He wanted to be an American. She yearned to be a grandmother. He did not want the responsibility of being a parent. It took a journey to Hong Kong, a city they had long ago abandoned, to bring these two together as mother and son.
