“What’s the Business” Begins Airing July 3

June 28, 2012 (San Diego) -- Many people dream of creating the next hit television show, but for San Diego High grad and SDSU alum Charles Magid (2010), that dream is coming true. The series he created, directed, and produced is slated to air this week (see below).

“What’s the Business” gives audiences an inside glance at the personal struggles that various companies’ founders conquered. The show documents how various businesses in Southern California were started and what they are currently doing to keep thriving in their respective sectors. Local companies featured in the first season include Taylor Guitars, Deuce Brand Watches, H2O Audio, Karl Strauss Brewery, Stingaree Nightclub, Searsucker Restaurant, Nika Water, and Fit Athletic.

Upon graduation, Magid wanted to come up with a show idea that was feasible for him. With his innate interest in business he created an idea for a series on entrepreneurs; “What’s the Business” was born.

“It seemed to me like a great idea, but I didn’t have the camera or crew… or any of the resources necessary to put this together. I started brainstorming and sent an e-mail out to some of my past film professors who mass e-mailed it out to their current students. I wanted to see if anybody would be interested in taking part in the project (videographers, cinematographers, editors). I got one guy to respond and continued to build off of that,” said Magid.

The series was filmed and produced completely by Magid and fellow students and graduates from San Diego State University. “There were moments that it felt like it wasn’t going anywhere, but I knew I had to just stick with it even if it felt like it might not work. If it was going to be easy, everybody would do it. All the good things that are really cool – they aren’t easy.” said Magid. Luckily, Qualcomm has stepped up to sponsor the series. It’s a great feeling to have it completed and have the support of a company such as Qualcomm to get it on air. I’m hopeful that the response to ‘What’s the Business’ can be a catalyst for future projects.”

The Avenue Music Group, a local company,  handled audio production for the series. Other San Diego graduates who contributed on the project include Matt Gerardi, Andrea Hughes, Alex Miyashiro, Richard Cano, Tim Fox, Laura Gill, Alex Hogue, Kyle Ginter, Joe Knox, and Shane Wilson.

“In the end, the feeling of being productive is the biggest accomplishment out of the project.” said Magid.
