March 9, 2012 (Rancho Penasquitos)-- San Diego Police Department Robbery Unit detectives are investigating two similar commercial robberies committed by a masked suspect in Rancho Penasquitos.

On Wednesday, February 29 at about 3:00 a.m., the suspect, conspicuous in a novelty skeleton mask and matching gloves, entered the Circle K convenience store located at 9300 Paseo Montalban and called the clerk to the service counter. The suspect lifted his shirt to display a handgun tucked into his waistband and announced the robbery. He was given money from the cash register and cigarettes. The suspect left the store on foot in an unknown direction of travel. On Thursday, March 1, 2012 at about 4:30 a.m., the suspect returned and committed the same robbery.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 26 to 30 years of age, 5’5-5’8, weighing 180 pounds. At the time of the robberies, the suspect was wearing a black jacket, a black baseball cap and black pants. He also wore a skeleton mask and black gloves that had the outline of bones on the back of the hands in the first case and purple latex gloves during the second. He was armed with a black handgun tucked into his waistband during the first robbery.

The same clerk was on duty during both robberies and noticed the same female entered the store just prior to the suspect’s entry. The female is described as Hispanic in her 30’s with brown hair with blond highlights. She had the top portion of her hair pulled back into a ponytail. She is about 5’5” with a medium to heavy build. She wore black Capri pants and a black nylon jacket with a red collar. Photos of both suspects are attached to this Release.

The incidents were captured on video, including the female’s entry to the store. Investigators believe the female may be involved in the robberies. Copies of the videos are available at the San Diego Police Department Headquarters Broadway customer service counter.
