September 27, 2009 (San Diego)—The Fourth Annual San Diego City College International Book Fair kicks off a full week of literary and cultural events on Monday. Already San Diego’s largest book event, the Lucha Libro theme for 2009 assures a broad regional appeal again this year--including paticipation by some East County writers.
The Lucha Libro program offers San Diegans a unique opportunity to meet award-winning writers, in different literary genres and experience a variety of related cultural forms, including music and film. A number of special activities are planned for children, and the young at heart.
From novels to poetry to non-fiction, from local to national-level writers, the line-up ranges from authors such as Michael Ornelas (Mesa College), Laurel Corona (City College), and Marilyn Chin (San Diego State) to novelist Ana Castillo, Nuyorican poet Willie Perdomo, and environmental writers Barry Sanders and William Powers.
On Thursday, the fair will premiere Nommogeneity, director Terrence Stubbs documentary about African American authors. An open reception will begin 6:30 p.m. with a screening at 7 p.m. at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park. All other Fair events will be on the City College campus.
To celebrate books and the people who read and write them, the Fair will feature a free concert by Grammy nominee Perla Batalla Friday evening, October 2nd at 9 p.m. at the City College Saville Theatre on C Street between 14th and 15th avenues.
The Fair culminates with a full day of author events—including a children’s section—and book vendor displays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3. The readings and book signings for adults will be held in the Saville Theatre.
A children’s activity room where youngsters can write and illustrate their own books, enjoy free face painting, and decorate masks will be located in the south end of the cafeteria. The children’s English-language section will be in City College Room D121A/B and a Spanish-language section in C211.
Admission to all events is free. For the full Lucha Libro program, a map to Fair sites and other information, visit www.sdcitybookfair.com or call (619) 388-3596.
