August 1, 2011 (San Diego)—The wife of Officer David Hall called San Diego Police today to report that her husband had shot and killed himself at their Linda Vista home. He was pronounced dead at the scene of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Lt. Andra Brown.

Officer Hall was the subject of an investigation involving an allegation of felony driving under the influence as well as a hit and run accident in Serra Mesa that injured a woman. The incident occurred while he was off-duty on February 22, 2011. He had been on paid administrative duty pending outcome of the investigation and court proceedings.

A 14 year veteran of the Department, Officer Hall was hired in January, 1997. He had served in a patrol assignment at Central Division, and later worked on the specialized narcotics and parolee apprehension teams. In August, 2008, he transferred to Traffic Division where he worked in the Accident Investigations Bureau until becoming a Traffic Motor Officer in March, 2010.

Chief William Lansdowne has met with the family, as well as those officers who worked most closely with Officer Hall to express his deepest sympathies.

"The San Diego Police Department was very aware of the stress he was under (following his arrest) and had taken every effort to get (him) the help he needed," Chief Lansdowne said in a press conference this afternoon. "In fact, our newly formed wellness unit had met with him just yesterday. Unfortunately, even with the help and support provided, Officer Hall unexpectedly decided to take his own life."

Since 1981, the San Diego Police Department has  had 11 members who have taken their own lives, according to Lt. Brown.
