April 1, 2017 (Santee) – The Santee City Council will hold a special meeting in April 3rd at 2 p.m. to consider a resolution proclaiming an emergency in order to authorize immediate repair of certain corrugated metal pipe storm drain systems that have caused major sinkholes that threaten to undermine homes.  The sinkholes are located on East and West Hartland Circle and Ryder Court.

At the March 8th meeting, an attorney representing homeowners threatened to sue the city if repairs were not made to failed storm drain pipes on private property at an estimated cost of $485,000. Because the failed pipes connect to storm drains on public property that funnel water into the pipes, the city could potentially have significant legal exposure.

The resolution would authorize a transfer of funds and waiver of competitive bidding requirements in order for the City Manager to enter into contracts to complete the necessary repairs, replacements, or other actions as necessary, up to $500,000.

“Given the possibility of future rain, permanent repairs are required to remedy the condition to safeguard life, health and property,” a staff summary states.
