January 3, 2018 (Santee) - The City of Santee is again hosting a national 50 km. race-walk championship on Jan. 20 in conjunction with a local special event aimed at promoting health and fitness.

The second annual Santee Active Lifestyle Expo is set for Jan. 20 at the Trolley Square Shopping Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The expo is free and offers fun activities for children and adults.

“Getting inspired to improve your health and fitness is a great way to start the New Year,” said Bree Humphrey, Santee’s special events supervisor. “The expo offers resources and ideas that will allow you to make 2018 the most active year yet.”

“Everyone in Santee can have an active lifestyle because of the wide range of fitness activities here. We have hiking trails, specialty gyms, yoga, disc golf, pickle ball, walking programs for seniors and more,” she said.

Before the expo gets underway, spectators can check out the USA Track and Field National Championship race walk competition, which features Olympic-caliber athletes walking faster than most people can run.

The race will take place on Town Center Parkway and Riverview Drive from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The winner of the 50km. race walk (31.1 miles) will receive an $8,000 prize.

At the expo exhibit and activity area, free breakfast sandwiches and delicious acai bowls will be available while supplies last.

The Kids’ Fit Fun Zone—free to all children--will feature a climbing wall, an obstacle course and a giant fitness board game. BMX professionals will be flying through the air on a half-pipe ramp. There will also be nearly 50 vendor booths handing out samples, information, and health and wellness tips.

Attendees who are wearing fitness attire and athletic shoes can try out a different fitness class every 30 minutes on the amphitheater stage. They can also challenge their strength and endurance by running through the Extreme Fit Obstacle Course with more than 200 feet of inflatable obstacles and firefighter challenges.

The expo is sponsored by the City of Santee, Waste Management and the Grossmont Healthcare District.
