Five Aztecs score two goals apiece to key victory

March 5, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State lacrosse team picked up its third straight victory Sunday with a 14-8 win over visiting Boston University in a non-conference clash at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
SDSU snapped a 7-7 deadlock with six straight goals during a 12-minute span in the second half to help raise its record to 3-2 on the season, while the Terriers slip to 1-3 overall.
The Aztecs displayed their offensive balance once again, as nine different players found the back of the net, including two goals apiece by seniors Kayla Deitz, Kristen Hickey, Vickie Porter and Alex Watson, as well as sophomore Natalie Peel.
SDSU also received single tallies from senior Ijeoma Ikpe, along with sophomores Jill Haight, Grace McGinty and Sarah Dorl, as the Scarlet and Black outshot BU, 37-23, including a 19-7 spread in the first half.
Deitz’s first strike of the afternoon came on a free position attempt with just two seconds left in the first half that put the Aztecs up 7-5 at intermission. Earlier, BU fashioned a two-goal spurt to tie the game at 4-4 by the 6:59 mark of the period, but San Diego State countered the threat with a score by Watson, followed by McGinty’s goal with 2:04 remaining in the half.
After the break, the Terriers knotted things up at 7-7 on markers by Mickenzie Larivee and Avery Donohoe in the first five-plus minutes of the second period. However, the visitors were unable to gain the upper hand as Ikpe’s unassisted goal with 21:41 left sparked a 6-0 blitz that put SDSU up for good. BU finally ended its drought with Larivee’s third strike of the day at the 11:28 mark, but the Aztecs answered with Hickey’s second free position conversion three minutes later, which closed out the scoring.
SDSU’s senior goalkeeping tandem of Katrina Reeves and Katie Merritt split time in front of the cage, with Merritt making nine saves after entering the contest with 21:41 to go in the contest, while the Terriers’ counterpart Caroline Meegan made 13 stops of her own.
For the game, SDSU maintained a sizable 16-7 advantage in draw controls, including a 16-1 margin in the first half to go along with 27-13 spread in ground balls. Individually, freshman Ryli Quinn led all players with six draw controls, while senior Casey Taggart came up with five ground balls.
San Diego State will be back in action on Friday, March 10 when it plays host to Saint Joseph’s, starting at 7 p.m. PT.
