March 27, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State lacrosse program garnered two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation accolades on Monday as senior Kristen Hickey earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while freshman Taylor Sullivan received Rookie of the Week recognition. The two certificates represent the second weekly conference awards this season for the Aztec teammates, giving SDSU six overall.

A native of Dedham, Mass., Hickey displayed her versatility this past weekend in a pair of Aztec victories over Saint Mary’s and California. In addition to combining for five goals, the SDSU tri-captain racked up five ground balls, five draw controls and two caused turnovers, helping the Scarlet and Black match its best 10-game start in program history at 7-3. She also contributed to the Aztecs’ 83.7 percent success rate on clears this past weekend (36-43).

In SDSU’s 16-5 win over Saint Mary’s last Friday, Hickey finished with three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers to go with a team-leading three goals. Two days later in the Aztecs’ 14-13 overtime triumph over Cal, she came up with three draw controls and two ground balls while scoring two additional goals.

With her totals, Hickey ranks third in the MPSF with 27 ground balls so far this year and has compiled multiple ground balls in nine of 10 games. She has also registered at least two draw controls in the last four games. Hickey, who earned MPSF Offensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 6, leads SDSU with 25 points on a team-best 21 goals and four assists. She also tops the squad with 61 shots, including 37 on goal.

Sullivan, meanwhile, played a key role in the Aztecs’ 2-0 week, finishing with four points on three goals and one assist while notching six ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control.

Against Cal, the Annapolis, Md., product scored two huge goals, including the game-tying marker off a rebound with 39 seconds left in regulation. She also collected a season-high three ground balls for the second game in a row and posted one draw control and one caused turnover.

Earlier against Saint Mary’s, Sullivan scored a goal on a free position attempt to go along with three ground balls and one caused turnover.

For the season, Sullivan leads all Aztec freshman with 13 points on 11 goals and two assists. She has also scooped up 10 ground balls while recording five caused turnovers and two draw controls. She has tallied two goals in four different games this season.

San Diego State closes out its month-long homestand on Friday, March 31, when it takes on Ivy League member Brown University in a non-conference game, starting at 5 p.m. PT. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free Aztec drawstring backpack.
