April 22, 2017 (Tucson) - The San Diego State men’s golf team slipped into fourth place at the 2017 Mountain West Championship on Saturday after shooting an even-par 288 during the second round at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.

Despite the stumble, the Aztecs remain just four shots off the pace with a 36-hole total of 9-under 567.  Colorado State (-13) took over the top spot, vaulting three places in the standings thanks to a second-round 280, while Boise State (-11) and UNLV (-11) are tied for second heading into Sunday’s final round on the par-72, 7,194-yard Catalina Course.

Individually, SDSU was paced by senior Gunn Yang (Pyeongchang, South Korea), who finds himself in a three-way tie for fifth at 4-under 140 after carding a 71. The Torrey Pines High product offset two bogeys with a three birdies and a team-high 12 pars to complete his second straight round below par.

With his total, Yang finds himself five shots in back of front-runner Brian Humphreys of Boise State (-9) on the leaderboard, along with Sunwoo Choi of Air Force and Blake Cannon of Colorado State, while UNLV’s John Oda (-8) occupies the second spot, followed by Wyoming’s Ryan Wallen (-7) and another Boise State golfer Donny Hopoi (-5).

Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.) was the only other Aztec player to shoot in red figures Saturday, firing a team-low 70 to climb 11 places into a tie for 15th at 1-under 143.  The SDSU junior sank four birdies overall, including an impressive conversion on the par-4, 404-yard 13th, which ranks as the fourth-toughest hole of the tournament, before closing with five straight pars.

Trevor Norby (Carlsbad, Calif.) also sits in the 15th position; however, the Aztec redshirt freshman slipped seven places after carding a second-round 73. The San Marcos High alum tied Abercrombie with four birdies of his own, but five bogeys, including three on the front nine, precipitated his fall.

PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) also lost ground on Saturday, tumbling 13 places into a tie for 21st at even-par 144 thanks to a 74. The SDSU junior countered three bogeys with a trio of birdies, including a successful drain on the par-4, 428-yard No. 16, which ranked as the sixth-toughest hole of the second round. However, a double-bogey on the par-5 10th hastened his drop.

Rounding out the Aztec contingent was Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) whose front-nine struggles resulted in an atypical 79. The SDSU senior, who slid into the 41st position at 5-over 149, was plagued by five bogeys and a double at the par-3 No. 4, but rebounded with eight straight pars after the turn.

The Mountain West Championship concludes on Sunday when San Diego State tees off alongside New Mexico for the final round, starting at 9 a.m. PDT on hole No. 1.
