September 3, 2022 (Omaha) - On a warm night in Omaha, the Aztec men’s soccer team (0-3-0) fell 1-0 to Omaha (1-2-0) on Friday evening at Al F. Caniglia Field. The Aztecs gave up a goal late on and could not find an equalizer.

With the score tied in the 81st minute Omaha took the lead courtesy of Mathis Pilon St. Louis. He was played through on goal from a ball in the midfield and had his shot go past Jacob Castro in the Aztecs net to take a 1-0 advantage.

It was a physical match throughout as seven yellow cards were shown, as well as a straight red card given to Omaha’s Haider Al-Barakat in the 86th minute, for a late lunging challenge. The Aztecs, however, could not find an equalizer.

In the first half the Aztecs were on the offensive early, as Austin Brummett was played in on goal off a nice through ball by Tristan Viviani in just the second minute of action. Brummett was then fouled in the box by the Omaha defense and awarded a penalty. Brummett’s ensuing penalty was saved by the Omaha keeper to keep the match level at 0-0. Neither team would be able to find an opening goal the rest of the half, and neither team was able to threaten the opposing keepers and the match went into the halftime break knotted up at 0-0.

As for the second half, the Aztecs started well and on the front foot to begin the second half, but could not find an opening goal. San Diego State mustered seven shots in the second half, but were unable to find a goal to give them the lead. Jules Anderson came close in the 53rd minute but saw his effort saved by the Omaha keeper. The Aztecs also had a chance to tie the score in the 90th minute but Noah Cretier’s strike was just off the mark.

The Stat: Austin Brummett, a freshman from Bow, N.H. made his first career start against Omaha.

Up Next: The Aztecs are back on the pitch on Monday when they play at Creighton. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. PT (6:30 p.m. CT).
