April 3, 2014 (San Diego) – Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at San Diego State University. The campus seeks to commemorate the historic anniversary later this month, but cannot locate a transcript or audio tape of the speech. Only one grainy photo is known to exit.
“We’re looking for people who were present when he spoke, with hopes that they can share their memories of the experience,” said Paul Minifee, PhD,Assistant Professor at the Department of Rhetoric andWriting Studies.
King was already famous at the time of his visit, six months after he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He had been already been named Time Magazine's Man of the Year. Six months after this speech, he won a Nobel Peace Prize.
But due to the controversial nature of his messages and, perhaps, discriminatory attitudes of the era, records of his speech have been lost—in stark contrast to a speech delivered just one year earlier by President John F. Kennedy.
