March 12, 2017 (Long Beach) - Junior Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to lift the San Diego State softball team to a 6-1 victory over Harvard Sunday afternoon at Long Beach State. It was the third straight win for the Aztecs (16-9) in their final non-conference game of the season.

Tied at 1-1 after five innings, SDSU loaded the bases in the sixth on a pinch-hit single by freshman Megan Smith (Valencia, Calif.), a hit by pitch by freshman Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) and a single by redshirt freshman Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.). Peres then took a 3-1 pitch well over the left-field fence for the grand slam and game-winning RBIs. Peres leads the team with seven home runs and 29 RBIs in just 24 games.

San Diego State took the lead in the first when senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) singled to right-center field, moved to second on a four-pitch walk to sophomore Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) and scored on a single to third base by junior Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.).

The Crimson (7-3), which beat the Aztecs, 5-4, on Friday, tied it in the fifth on a single before Peres’ grand slam put the game out of reach in the sixth.

SDSU added an insurance run in the seventh as Sturdivant doubled and scored on a double by Stewart.

San Diego State outhit Harvard, 11-7, in the game, led by Stewart (two RBIs) and Cable (one walk) with two hits apiece. Peres added a walk to her grand slam, while Sturdivant and freshman Sami Aguilar (Orangevale, Calif.) each had a hit and a walk.

Junior Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) got the win for the Aztecs after allowing two hits in a perfect 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out two. She’s now 4-2 on the season. Senior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) got the start and surrendered one run on five hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings, striking out one.

SDSU kicks off Mountain West play at home against Fresno State this weekend, beginning 6 p.m. PT Friday at SDSU Softball Stadium.
