March 26, 2017 (Fort Collins, Colo.) - The San Diego State softball team dropped an 11-5 decision to Colorado State in the series finale Sunday at Ram Field. The Aztecs (18-13, 2-4 MW) had 12 hits in the game, but left eight on base and committed three errors.

The Rams (15-10, 3-3 MW), meanwhile, scored five times in the first and third innings, and once in the fourth thanks to 16 hits and the three SDSU errors.

CSU raced out of the gate with five runs in the top of the first inning on four hits, two walks and a hit batter.

San Diego State responded in the top of the second when it loaded the bases with no outs on a Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) walk, Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) single and Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) single. Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) followed with a single up the middle to plate Stewart. After Kaylyn Pierce was replaced in the circle by Larisa Petakoff for Colorado State, Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) kept the bats going with a single up the middle to score Cable. With the bases loaded and still no outs, Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) ripped hard-hit ball to Ram first baseman Hannah McCorkhill, who was able to catch the ball and touch first to double up Thompson. Zaria Meshack then grounded out to the catcher on a bunt, stranding two runners in scoring position.

CSU tacked on five more runs in third on five hits and a pair of Aztec errors.

SDSU answered with two runs in the fourth as Ignacio walked and Thompson doubled. Byrd then stroked a double to the left-center field gap to bring San Diego State within six at 10-4.

Colorado State scored another run in the fourth on a third Aztec error.

In the fifth, Cable had a one-out single and moved all the way to third on a Ram fielding error by center fielder Madison Kilcrease. She would not score, however, as SDSU followed with consecutive groundouts.

San Diego State got one run back in the sixth as Meshack beat out an infield single and the late throw by the pitcher went into the outfield. Meshack was able to score and make it a six-run deficit at 11-5.

Neither team would score the rest of the game.

Meshack had three of the Aztecs’ 12 hits, including a double, her first career extra-base hit and a run. Cable and Thompson added two hits apiece, while Ignacio and Stewart each recorded a hit and a walk.

Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) took the loss after allowing five runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter over 0 1/3 innings. Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits over 1 2/3 innings, while striking out one, and Marissa Moreno (Torrance, Calif.) yielded two unearned runs on eight hits over three innings with two strikeouts. Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) came into pitch in the sixth and struck out one without allowing a runner to reach base.

SDSU plays host to San Jose State for a weekend series, beginning 6 p.m. PT Friday.
