March 4, 2023 (San Diego) - Sarah Lehman and Dee Dee Hernandez combined on a three-hit shutout in San Diego State’s 2-0 victory over Boston University Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs improved to 12-6 on the season and 5-5 against teams that made the 2022 NCAA tournament, while the Terriers fell to 13-5.

A day after tossing five hitless innings in SDSU’s 5-0 win over Long Beach State on Friday, Lehman (6-1) pitched five scoreless frames tonight with just two hits allowed and one walk, while striking out four. Hernandez, meanwhile, gave up one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to pick up her third save of the season.

Offensively, San Diego State wasted no time getting a run in the bottom of the first inning as the first three batters in the lineup all got hits. Bella Espinoza led off with a bunt single and scored on a double by Jillian Celis, who was thrown out at third on the play. Mac Barbara followed with a single and Macey Keester later walked but the Aztecs could only get the one runner across the plate.

BU got its first runner in the top of the fourth when Caitlin Coker doubled with one out and moved to third on a flyout by Emily Gant. Lehman, however, got Brooke Deppiesse to pop up weakly to SDSU third baseman Alex Bunton.

San Diego State didn’t waste its next scoring opportunity in the fourth as Cali Decker led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by AJ Murphy.

It appeared Boston Univ. would finally get on the scoreboard in the sixth as Lauren Kelleher led off with a triple off Hernandez. Hernandez, however, got Kayla Roncin to ground out to Bunton at third, Kelleher at the plate in a ball hit back to her in the circle by Coker and Emily Gant to strike out swinging to get out of the jam.

Hernandez then retired the Terriers in order in the seventh to secure the 2-0 shutout victory.

Five different Aztecs had a hit in the game, which lasted just 1 hour, 37 minutes.
