April 4, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State softball’s Alex Formby has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the second career weekly accolade for the junior and first by an Aztec pitcher this season.
Formby, a native of Orange, Calif., helped SDSU to a series win over San José State over the weekend, finishing all three games. The right-hander was 2-0 with a 1.85 ERA over 11 1/3 innings, striking out two. Out of the 15 hits that Formby gave up, only one was an extra-base hit (a double).
In a 5-3 loss on Friday, Formby yielded two hits in the final 2/3 innings of relief. In a 5-3 win on Saturday, she picked up the win after allowing two hits over 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Formby earned the win for a second consecutive game Sunday after giving up three runs on 11 hits and four walks in a season-high 7 1/3 innings of relief, while striking out two. In all, Formby threw an incredible 122 pitches despite not starting the game.
On the season, Formby is 6-3 with a 4.01 ERA and three saves over 59 1/3 innings. She has 32 strikeouts against 21 walks and has limited the opposition to a .292 average.
Formby was a second-team all-MW selection in 2016 in her first year at San Diego State after transferring from Virginia. She was also the MW Pitcher of the Week on May 3, 2016.
The Aztecs have their bye this weekend before returning to SDSU Softball Stadium from April 13-15 to play host to New Mexico.
