October 24, 2011 (San Diego)-- C.U.R.E. AFRICA (Communities United Reviving East Africa) is a San Diego State University student organized project created on August 28, 2011 by Mohamed Ahmed and Yousef Abraham in partnership with Phi Beta Sigma and Somali Student Union.

C.U.R.E. AFRICA has taken the initiative to raise awareness and money on campus and within the larger communities to help the millions of starving children in East Africa affected by famine conditions.  An event on campus tonight seeks to increase awareness and public support to help save lives.

“Our goal is to unite college students, faculty, and student organizations to take swift actions to support and advocate for those affected in the Horn of Africa and to become the voice for the millions of children who cry in silence,” said Yousef Abraham, president, National Pan-Hellenic Council at SDSU and president of the Lamba Iota chapter of Phi Beta Sigma.

The Horn of Africa in particular Somalia is facing one of the worst droughts to ever hit that region. Also, large numbers of refugees are in desperate need for food, water, shelter and medicine. In the mist of all that, they are facing 21 years of civil war and conflict. Currently, it is estimated that 35,000 children under the age of 5 have already died in Southern Somalia.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. is having an awareness program for the famine and drought situation in East Africa, Monday Oct. 24, 2011. It will take place at 7 pm in Storm Hall 247 on SDSU's campus. At the event there will be a presentation from Dr. Ismael from Veterans Hospital in La Jolla and the American Refugee Committee.
