March 30, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State senior Ioli Benekou is the Golden Coast Water Polo Player of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. The award is the second of her career and first since her freshman campaign in 2014.

The defender from Greece helped SDSU sweep a two-game road trip through T-No. 25 California Baptist and 21st-ranked LMU. Benekou tallied four goals, one assist, nine steals, two ejections drawn and four field blocks, and led the team in goals, steals and field blocks. She was also a part of a defense that limited the Lancers to just two goals in the second half and shut out the Lions in the final 16 minutes.

In the 9-8 win at CBU, Benekou recorded a team-high-tying two goals, one assist, a team-best five steals and one field block, while drawing two ejections. The senior scored SDSU’s final goal of the first half to cut CBU’s lead to 6-4, and then provided the game-winner on a power play with 1:38 left in the contest.

The next day at LMU, Benekou led all Aztecs with two goals and three field blocks, and shared team-high honors with four steals. She was responsible for two of SDSU’s three second-half goals, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter with 2:23 left in the game, which ended with the Aztecs winning, 7-6.

The GCC weekly award is the third of the season for SDSU and equals the total from 2016. Caroline Israels was the weekly recipient on Feb. 15 and was a repeat winner last week.

San Diego State, which is in first place in the Golden Coast with a 4-0 record, steps out of league action this week to compete at the Hawai’i Invitational. The T-No. 12 Aztecs will face third-ranked UCLA tonight at 7:15 p.m. HT (10:15 p.m. PT).
