SDSU shot just 29.1 percent from the floor

November 11, 2016 (Riverside) - San Diego State women’s basketball got scores from three of its four freshmen but fell in its season opener, 72-44, to UC Riverside on Friday night at SRC Arena.
Making their collegiate debut, the Aztecs got production from Baylee Vanderdoes (7), Abby Lowe (2) and Monique Terry (2). McKynzie Fort paced her team with 14 points, while Ariell Bostick’s eight rebounds were a team-high.
On the whole, San Diego State shot just 29.1 percent from the floor and was 64.3 percent from the free throw line. They were 3-for-16 from beyond the arc, two of which came from Kymberly Ellison.
Starting for the 2016-17 debut were Vanderdoes, juniors Fort and Cheyenne Greenhouse, and seniors Bostick and Ellison.
The beginning of the contest, the season opener for both teams, was a thrilling back-and-forth affair, with the speed and intensity of the game heightened from the opening tip. The Aztecs cashed in on their first five attempts for an early 12-8 advantage.
But after its hot start, San Diego State became stymied by the Highlanders’ defense and proceeded to shoot 2-for-18 from the floor. Four made free-throws by Terry (2), Arantxa Gomez Ferrer (1) and Fort (1) and a late first-quarter trey by Geena Gomez kept the game within reach for the Aztecs.
But with time waning in the second half, the Scarlet and Black was determined to go into the intermission on a high. As 50 seconds were on the clock, Bostick snatched the ball just over the center line threw it to Greenhouse on the right side of the net, who knocked in the 40-21 score.
San Diego State opened up the second half with something to prove. At 8:34, Greenhouse went for a jumper that ricocheted off the rim. Vanderdoes picked up the rebound and laid it in for the 44-23 tally.
Vanderdoes was able to duplicate the play less than two minutes later. Gomez went for the three-pointer but the ball, again, careened off the rim. She corralled the ball and dumped it in, getting fouled on the play and making the ensuing free throw. She was able to draw another foul shortly thereafter and both shots were good.
With just under three minutes left in the third quarter, Fort fed off of the energy and got a shot of her own. Driving to the net, she leaned in to draw contact and floated in a left-handed shot for the 48-31 score. Fort would add another layup with 1:13 on the clock.
Unfortunately for the Aztecs, the momentum was unable to stay in their favor, and despite a jumper by Gomez with 8:10 remaining, Abby Lowe’s first collegiate field goal with 6:05 to go, two jumpers by Fort and a field goal by Greenhouse, the Aztecs were unable to rally against the final 72-44 score.
San Diego State debuts its 2016-17 team in Viejas Arena on Monday, November 14 against San Diego Christian. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m.
